Human Eyes came from a song Frankie had kicking around. It’s very near and dear to his heart because it’s about him meeting his wife. But of the many ideas he had when we first met, I really didn’t know what to do with this one (the original version is light years away from this version). It needed re-arranging, and Frankie said he thought it should be a power ballad. When I didn’t see a clear path to that, I asked my wife, Amy Douglas, to help re-imagine Human Eyes as a power ballad. Which she did.
We demoed it up as a power ballad, and it just never flew. And while the song progression certainly worked, Frankie felt it was too slow and dragged too much as a power ballad. And while I thought it worked on some levels, Frankie had a point. Even as just a demo, there was nothing exciting about the song as a power ballad, so we shelved it for a few months.
Eventually, we discussed rocking it up a bit. I upped the tempo, and found a way to rock up the same progression. That done, when Jordan added his drums, the track finally exploded. And after every guitar tracking session, the damn song was stuck in my head all night.

lyrics
Time, I wanna be your friend
With a girl like you
Until the story ends
Life, can really put you down
With a girl like you
My life gets turned around.
Yeah, I watch you dance alone
Your glass of wine, a promise of a glass half full
Lord, you know I know I feel the pull.
Oh my love I see with human eyes
Imagine my surprise,
I can see with human eyes
Girl, I wanna be your man
With a girl like you
And a brand new master plan
We can’t tell what life may bring
But with a girl like you
I’ll go through anything
They might tell you I’m no good
But I can tell you
Maybe I have made mistakes,
For you, I’ll do what it takes
Cause my love I see with human eyes
The kind of love I
Never thought I’d ever win it
Never let my heart get in it
Oh my love I see with human eyes
The sun is gonna rise
I can see with human eyes
Oh, I’ve drawn the blackest cards.
I’ve only known it hard
And I’ve let my heart grow cold.
Yeah, I’ve suffered to survive
With you I come alive
And I’m happy to grow strong and to grow old.
Oh my love I see with human eyes
The kind of love I
Never thought I’d ever win it
Never let my heart get in it
Oh my love I see with human eyes.
Imagine my surprise
I can see with human eyes
Time, I want to be your friend
With a girl like you
The story never ends
