Breaking started with a very Keith-like riff and progression that I'd been kicking around for a few years — not knowing when to bust it out. Then I found Frankie.

When we first demoed this song, it started out with a straight-up Stonesy 2/4 beat on a drum machine. I knew we could do a lot better than that. When Jordan was ready to track it, I asked him to come up with something a bit more syncopated. He sure did! And his beat gave Breaking the sonic boom it needed.

Once I heard drums, I knew I needed to come up with a complementary part to the main riff to fill in the gaps. And of course, that beat gave Rob Phillips a chance to create a phenomenal slap bass part.

Breakin' is an oddball. On paper, it probably shouldn't even work. Yet I think it's one of our strongest songs. A weird mish-mash of influences. The semi-neo-classical solo I came up with is totally weird in the context of this song, but somehow it too, works! And then it goes back to the simple hooky, sticky chorus that gets stuck in your head for days.
